Alpena, MI – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for much of northeast Lower Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula until 1 p.m. Sunday, as heavy snow spreads across the region tonight and continues into Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, total snow accumulations are expected to range from 5 to 12 inches, with the heaviest snowfall forecast along the US-23 corridor from Rogers City to Alpena, and east of Interstate 75 in Mackinac and Chippewa counties. Snow will intensify late Saturday night before tapering off by midday Sunday.

The storm is expected to make travel very difficult, with slick, snow-covered roads and rapidly changing visibility conditions. Communities including Gladwin, Alcona, Arenac, Alpena, and Cedarville are expected to see significant accumulations by morning.

Motorists are urged to delay travel if possible and to use extreme caution if driving. Officials recommend keeping vehicles winter-ready and carrying an emergency kit with food, water, and a flashlight in case of roadside delays.
