St. Ignace, MI – Drivers across Western Mackinac County should prepare for hazardous travel tonight as a strong winter storm continues to bring heavy snow, blowing drifts, and rapidly changing visibility along major routes, including the US-2 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Gaylord, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday, with 4 to 8 inches of snow expected, and localized totals that may exceed 11 inches. Winds up to 35 mph will create areas of blowing and drifting snow from late Monday evening through early Tuesday.
Forecasters caution that snowfall rates may vary dramatically over very short distances, leading to sudden whiteout conditions. These sharp variations could make the Monday evening commute and Tuesday morning travel particularly dangerous for those driving between communities west of the Mackinac Bridge.
NWS meteorologists say the combination of heavy lake-enhanced snow and gusty winds will significantly reduce visibility at times, especially in open stretches along US-2. Drivers may encounter slick pavement, snow-covered lanes, and drifting across the roadway, increasing the risk of spinouts or delays.
Residents are urged to plan for hazardous travel conditions and consider delaying nonessential trips until conditions improve. Those who must drive should reduce speed, keep headlights on, and remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions.
The heaviest snowfall is expected to taper late Tuesday morning, but lingering blowing snow may still affect visibility in exposed areas through midday.
