US-17, Wilmington, North Carolina – Dense fog early Thursday is significantly reducing visibility on major roadways, creating hazardous travel conditions during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service office in Wilmington, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Visibility may drop below one-quarter mile at times across Wilmington and surrounding portions of southeast North Carolina, with impacts extending into parts of northeast South Carolina.
The advisory affects several key travel corridors, including US-17, I-140, and nearby coastal routes where fog has developed rapidly overnight. Low visibility may make it difficult for drivers to see traffic signals, stopped vehicles, and lane markings.
The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and leave extra following distance while traveling through fog-affected areas. Sudden changes in visibility are possible, especially near waterways and low-lying terrain.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later this morning as fog dissipates, but delays are possible during peak commute hours.
