RHINELANDER, Wis. – Northern Wisconsin is in for a snowy stretch Sunday as lake-effect snow bands form off Lake Superior and move across the Northwoods, making travel tricky from Eagle River to Rhinelander. The snow will begin midmorning and continue into Monday, coating roads and reducing visibility across higher terrain and open stretches.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect — from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday for Oneida County, and until 6 a.m. Monday for Vilas County. Snow totals will vary widely, with 1 to 2 inches expected in Rhinelander and 2 to 4 inches (locally up to 6 inches) possible in the northwest corner of Vilas County near Lac du Flambeau and Manitowish Waters.
Motorists traveling along U.S. 45, Highway 70, and Highway 47 should anticipate snow-covered roads and rapidly changing visibility, especially where heavier bursts set up. The most intense snowfall is expected during daylight hours Sunday, coinciding with heavier lake-effect development.
Residents are urged to slow down, use headlights, and allow extra travel time, as even light snow can create slick spots on bridges and untreated surfaces.
Snow will gradually taper late Sunday night for most areas, though Vilas County could see lingering flurries through early Monday before drier air moves in. Another weak system midweek could bring light snow once again to Wisconsin’s far north, signaling a true November pattern shift toward winter.
