Heavy snow will blanket ridgelines from Snowshoe to Harman, while winds whip through valleys and along high passes, reducing visibility and cutting across already slick roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Tuesday for Southeast Randolph, Northwest Pocahontas, and Southeast Webster Counties. Forecasters expect 4 to 7 inches of snow, with locally higher totals along the highest terrain near Snowshoe Mountain. Winds could gust up to 40 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow and the potential for isolated power outages from downed branches.
Travelers on U.S. 219, Route 15, and Back Mountain Road should expect slippery, snow-covered surfaces through Monday, especially during the morning and evening commutes. Forecasters warn that the worst travel conditions are likely Monday afternoon as stronger snow bands develop along the higher peaks. Residents should avoid unnecessary mountain travel, keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, and prepare for possible power interruptions.
Conditions will slowly improve Tuesday morning, though gusty winds and frigid air will linger into midweek. This early-November storm offers a clear reminder that winter has arrived in the central Appalachians, with more cold waves expected before Thanksgiving.
