Gaylord, MI – A Red Flag Warning is in effect today for northern lower Michigan until 8 p.m., with the National Weather Service advising residents to be on alert for potential wildfires. The combination of dry vegetation, low humidity, and gusty winds has significantly increased the risk of wildfires in areas including Gaylord, Traverse City, and along US-131. Residents are urged to take immediate precautions, such as avoiding outdoor fires and properly extinguishing cigarettes, to prevent wildfire outbreaks.

According to the National Weather Service, southwest winds will blow at 10 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph this afternoon. Temperatures will rise to around 74°F, further drying out already vulnerable vegetation. With little recent rainfall, the conditions are primed for wildfires to spread quickly. The agency recommends against outdoor burning and grilling, particularly near wooded or grassy areas, and stresses the importance of fully extinguishing campfires.

The Red Flag Warning marks the second of the season, with weather models showing calmer conditions ahead. By Saturday, high temperatures will drop to the mid-50s, and rain is expected to arrive by Sunday. A 100% chance of rain Sunday morning and continuing through Columbus Day will provide relief from the dry spell, but today remains critical for wildfire prevention.
