Omaha, Nebraska – A tornado watch is in effect for much of eastern and central Nebraska until 10 p.m. Thursday, as dangerous storms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail sweep through the region.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 501 covers 34 counties, including Douglas, Sarpy, Platte, Madison, Holt, and Dakota. The greatest risk extends across northeast Nebraska, including cities such as Omaha, Norfolk, Columbus, Fremont, and Wayne, where supercell development is expected through the evening hours.

Wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to two inches in diameter may accompany isolated tornadoes. Residents along I-80, U.S. Highway 81, and near key corridors like Highway 275 should monitor weather alerts and seek shelter immediately if warnings are issued. Outdoor events in areas like Papillion, Blair, and Kearney may need to be postponed or moved indoors.

Drivers should avoid travel if storms approach, especially after sunset. Have multiple ways to receive warnings, charge phones, and prepare to move to a basement or interior room on short notice.

The tornado watch remains active until 10 p.m., but additional warnings or extended watches may follow as storms continue to track eastward.
