HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Keweenaw Peninsula is waking up to another round of lake-effect snow this morning, as strong northwest winds off Lake Superior drive narrow but intense snow bands across the tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Travelers will face slick roads and poor visibility through the morning hours, especially along elevated and exposed routes near Houghton and Copper Harbor.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Monday for Keweenaw and Northern Houghton Counties. Forecasters expect 2 to 4 additional inches of snow, though accumulation rates may vary sharply within just a few miles. Winds will gust up to 35 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow that will make travel difficult at times.

Drivers on U.S. 41 and M-26 should be prepared for snow-covered stretches, whiteouts near the lakeshore, and rapidly changing conditions. The advisory notes that the Monday morning commute could be especially hazardous as new snow overlays older packed surfaces.

Motorists are urged to slow down, use headlights, and give plows plenty of room as crews work to keep major routes passable. Though this storm won’t rival the heavier lake-effect events farther south, it underscores how quickly the Keweenaw’s early-winter pattern can turn treacherous.

Light snow is expected to taper by Monday afternoon, followed by calmer, colder weather midweek. However, forecasters hint at another clipper system possible by late week.
