CARIBOU, Maine – Winter’s first icy mix will brush across northern Maine tonight, coating roads and treetops from Millinocket to Fort Kent with a slippery blend of snow and freezing rain. Even light accumulations could make travel tricky early Monday as cold air grips the North Woods.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday for Aroostook, Piscataquis, Penobscot, and Somerset Counties. Forecasters expect up to two inches of snow and around one-tenth of an inch of ice, with the highest snow totals across the North Woods and light glaze potential farther south toward Millinocket and Houlton.
The mix will begin this evening, intensifying overnight before tapering near dawn. Freezing rain and sleet could briefly create glazed bridges and untreated roads, particularly along U.S. Route 1, I-95, and Maine Route 11. Commuters should plan for slick travel conditions and limited visibility during the Monday morning drive.
The National Weather Service urges drivers to slow down, allow extra time, and check newengland511.org for current road updates. Power disruptions are unlikely but possible where icing occurs on exposed lines.
By midmorning Monday, temperatures will edge above freezing, changing precipitation to light rain and mist. Another round of cold air later in the week could bring fresh snow chances by next weekend, signaling winter’s firm arrival in northern Maine.
