SPARTANBURG, SC — Calm, frosty air settles over the Upstate this morning, but clouds are already gathering to the west, signaling a pattern change that will bring rain and slick roads by Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, light sprinkles could develop later today, leading into steadier rain overnight and through Friday. Expect patchy fog before sunrise, followed by a chilly, gray day with highs near 51°F Thursday and 41°F Friday. Rainfall totals will be light — generally a quarter to half an inch — but visibility and wet pavement could impact early commuters along I-85 and Highway 29.

Friday’s rain may linger through midmorning, tapering off by afternoon. Behind the system, skies stay mostly cloudy but temperatures remain cool, hovering in the 40s and lower 50s through the weekend. A few stray showers could return Saturday night and Sunday, keeping the damp pattern alive into early next week.

Drivers should watch for patchy fog and slick intersections during morning hours. Pedestrians may also notice a thin layer of frost on elevated surfaces as air temperatures flirt with freezing overnight.

By Monday and Tuesday, sunshine and calmer weather return, offering a short-lived break before another potential front develops in mid-December — a system forecasters say could bring colder air and early winter precipitation to the Appalachians and upper Southeast.
