Herkimer, NY – A significant midweek winter storm may bring heavy snow to parts of the southern Adirondacks beginning late Tuesday night, creating hazardous travel for residents through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Albany, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Tuesday night through Thursday morning for Hamilton, Northern Fulton, Northern Herkimer, and Southern Herkimer Counties, including communities such as Old Forge, Long Lake, Little Falls, Caroga Lake, Dolgeville, and nearby areas.

Forecasters say 7 to 11 inches of snow are possible across the region, with the highest totals expected north of the New York State Thruway, particularly across northern Herkimer County. Snowfall rates may reach 1 inch per hour at times on Wednesday, making travel difficult and reducing visibility during heavier bursts.

NWS officials note that both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes may be impacted, with slick roads, snow-covered bridges and overpasses, and reduced visibility across the southern Adirondacks. Motorists traveling along Routes 28, 30, and 8 should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

The agency advises residents to monitor updated forecasts as the system approaches, as snowfall totals and timing may shift. Drivers are also encouraged to ensure vehicles are winter-ready, with proper tires, full fuel tanks, and emergency kits in case of delays.

If snowfall arrives as projected, travel across interior upstate New York could become challenging through midweek, especially in higher elevations and shaded valleys where snow accumulates more quickly.
