Buffalo, N.Y. – Dangerous heat and humidity are gripping western and central New York Thursday, with heat index values soaring into the mid to upper 90s through 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Genesee, Livingston, and Ontario counties. The advisory warns of elevated risks for heat-related illness, especially for outdoor workers, seniors, and children.

Cities from Rochester to Oswego could see real-feel temperatures peaking near 98°F this afternoon. In Buffalo, the combination of heat and high humidity may make even short periods outdoors dangerous without shade or hydration. Employers should follow OSHA guidelines for rest breaks and cooling access for anyone working outside.

Officials urge residents to avoid strenuous activity during the peak heat hours of 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., stay hydrated, and check on neighbors without air conditioning. Pets should never be left in vehicles — even briefly — as cabin temperatures can become deadly within minutes.

The advisory expires at 8 p.m., but lingering humidity may keep overnight conditions warm and uncomfortable.
