Long Lake, New York – Travel across the western and southern Adirondacks is expected to worsen through midweek as an ongoing round of lake effect snow gives way to a stronger system capable of producing heavy accumulations.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Hamilton County through early Wednesday morning as lake effect snow continues. An additional 1 to 2 inches is expected overnight, with wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph, creating slick roads and localized visibility issues.

A Winter Storm Watch then takes effect Wednesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon, signaling the potential for a more significant snowfall. Forecasters say 5 to 9 inches of snow could accumulate, especially along south-facing slopes of the southwest Adirondacks. Snowfall rates Wednesday afternoon and evening may briefly reach one inch per hour, leading to rapidly deteriorating travel conditions.

Communities including Long Lake, Wells, Sabattis, Hoffmeister, and surrounding higher terrain are most likely to see hazardous conditions on mountain roads, bridges, and untreated surfaces. Conditions may vary sharply over short distances due to banded snow, making travel unpredictable.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra time, and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions. Snow and travel impacts could persist into Thursday, and additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the storm evolves.
