Albany, NY – A significant winter storm is set to impact Northern Herkimer County beginning late Sunday morning, with moderate to heavy snow expected to continue through Monday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning starting at 10 a.m. Sunday, forecasting 7 to 14 inches of accumulation, mainly near and north of Route 28.

According to the NWS, snowfall rates may reach 0.5 to 0.75 inches per hour at times today through tonight, creating slick and hazardous travel conditions across Adirondack communities including Old Forge, Eagle Bay, Big Moose, Northwood, and McKeever. Periods of blowing snow and gusty winds may reduce visibility to below one mile, especially during heavier snowfall bursts.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly as the storm intensifies this afternoon. The agency warns that both local and through-travelers should anticipate delays, scattered slowdowns, and difficult driving through early Monday evening. Officials also urge residents and visitors to use caution on secondary and unplowed mountain roads, where snowfall rates may rapidly outpace clearing efforts.

The warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday, timed with a gradual tapering of snowfall later in the day. However, lingering light snow and blowing snow may continue to affect visibility into the evening hours.

Drivers who must travel during the storm are advised to keep extra food, water, and flashlights in their vehicles in case of emergencies. The NWS emphasizes preparing for sudden changes in conditions, especially near higher elevations.
