A bitter, 7-degree start this morning across the Albany–Rensselaer area marks another sharp December chill — and it’s not done yet. A new winter system arriving Wednesday will bring snow, a brief warmup, and then a quick freeze, setting up messy travel conditions through midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, snow is expected to begin Wednesday morning, transitioning to a rain-snow mix by afternoon as temperatures rise into the mid-30s. While snowfall totals should remain around 1 to 2 inches, slick roads and reduced visibility will develop quickly, especially for commuters on I-90, I-87, and the Northway corridor.
By Wednesday night, as colder air filters back in, rain will taper to drizzle and light snow. Temperatures will drop into the mid-20s, refreezing any wet surfaces and creating potential black ice through early Thursday. Winds may gust up to 20 mph, adding to the chill.
Thursday stays brisk and partly sunny with highs near 32°F, followed by another reinforcing cold shot Friday morning with lows around 19°F. The weekend looks calmer but cold — highs will hover in the low-30s through Sunday, with another chance of light snow Saturday night as winter weather systems continue to churn across the Northeast.
Residents should keep an eye on changing travel conditions midweek and prepare for refreezing Thursday morning.
