Binghamton, N.Y. – More than 6 inches of rain-soaked parts of Central New York by early Monday, causing flash flooding across several counties east of I-81 and leading to hazardous road conditions and localized damage.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the intense rainfall began Sunday and continued into the early hours of June 23, with radar estimates and observations confirming 6.5 inches or more in areas around Norwich, Cortland, and Oneonta. Multiple flash flood reports came in from Chenango, Otsego, and Broome counties.
Several roads east of I-81 were inundated, with emergency managers urging drivers to avoid travel overnight Sunday into Monday. In Chenango County, local agencies reported stranded vehicles and impassable routes. Portions of I-88 also saw reduced visibility and ponding.
Residents in low-lying areas were advised to move valuables to higher ground and stay alert for rising waters. With saturated soils, even moderate rainfall in the coming days could trigger renewed flooding.
The National Weather Service warns additional flood watches may be issued if storms redevelop midweek.
