Buffalo, NY – Lake effect snow is expected to develop across parts of western and central New York today, bringing accumulating snowfall and potentially hazardous travel conditions through this evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, lake effect snow showers will intensify east and southeast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, with the greatest impacts expected this afternoon through tonight. Forecasters say snowfall will be focused across northeastern Wayne County, northern Cayuga County, and southern Oswego County.

Snowfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected east and southeast of Lake Ontario, including areas near Fulton, Pulaski, and along portions of the Interstate 81 corridor. These bands may lead to slippery road conditions and reduced visibility, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours.

Farther west, minor snow accumulations are expected east of Lake Erie, including parts of Erie, Niagara, and Wyoming counties. Snowfall in these areas is expected to be lighter but could still cause slick spots on untreated roads.

The lake effect snow is expected to gradually diminish overnight, with most activity winding down by late tonight or early Monday morning as bands shift north and weaken.

Drivers traveling across Interstate 81, Interstate 90, Route 104, and secondary roads in central New York are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions.

Communities across Oswego County, Cayuga County, Wayne County, and surrounding parts of western and central New York should stay weather-aware and monitor updates as winter conditions continue on the first full day of the season.
