Albany, NY – A cold front moving through upstate New York today is expected to bring much cooler temperatures and periods of lake effect snow across portions of the southern Adirondacks and western Mohawk Valley, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Albany.
Forecasters said that 2 to 4 inches of snow could accumulate in higher elevations near Old Forge, Herkimer, and Cobleskill, while lighter totals of 1 inch or less are expected farther east toward Albany, Pittsfield, and Glens Falls. The system, which began early Monday, will continue through Wednesday morning, with localized bursts of snow creating slick travel conditions.
The cold front will usher in a much cooler airmass, dropping temperatures into the 20s and 30s overnight. The NWS advises drivers to use caution on untreated roads, especially across elevated and rural areas where snow may accumulate more quickly.
While snowfall will be moderate compared to western New York’s heavier lake effect totals, forecasters note that this marks one of the region’s first widespread snow events of the season.
