Montpelier, Vermont –
Holiday travel across Vermont and northern New York could slow significantly starting Tuesday as a broad area of snowfall spreads across the region, creating slick roads and reduced visibility into early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning for large portions of central, northern, and southern Vermont, as well as parts of northern New York. Snow is expected to begin in northern New York early Tuesday before expanding into Vermont during the afternoon and evening.
Most areas, including Montpelier, Stowe, Killington, Newport, and St. Johnsbury, are expected to receive between 3 and 5 inches of snow. Roads across the Adirondacks, Green Mountains, and Northeast Kingdom could become snow-covered, especially during the Tuesday evening commute when snowfall rates may briefly increase.
The combination of steady snowfall and increased holiday traffic raises concerns for slower travel along major corridors such as I-89, I-91, Route 100, and secondary mountain roads. Untreated surfaces, bridges, and higher elevation routes are likely to be the most hazardous.
Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, and check road conditions before heading out. Snow is expected to taper late Tuesday night, but slick spots may linger into Wednesday morning as advisories remain in effect through early midweek.
