Albany, N.Y. – Strong thunderstorms are pushing east across the western Adirondacks and the Mohawk Valley Monday evening, bringing the potential for damaging winds and large hail. The National Weather Service in Albany warns that some storms could reach severe levels through 8 p.m.

According to the weather service, localized gusts above 60 mph and hailstones up to one inch in diameter are possible in parts of Fulton, Herkimer, and Hamilton counties. The storms are expected to weaken later tonight but could cause travel delays, downed tree limbs, and isolated power outages in affected areas.

Drivers on the New York Thruway near Utica and I-87 north toward Lake George should prepare for sudden downpours and reduced visibility. Emergency officials urge residents to secure outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel until storms pass.

Conditions are expected to improve overnight, though additional scattered showers could linger into Tuesday morning. More updates are likely if stronger cells redevelop later this evening.
