Albany, N.Y. – Night skies across New York could light up with a rare display tonight as the Northern Lights push far south into Tuesday morning. Clear skies will be crucial for viewing, with the best chances across the Capital Region and into western New England.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, a strong solar storm could trigger geomagnetic activity bright enough for auroras as far south as New York, Pennsylvania, and even Kentucky. Residents are urged to find dark, rural spots away from city lights between midnight and dawn for the best view.

Locally, skies around Albany will gradually clear late tonight, giving stargazers a window for possible aurora sightings. Calm winds and overnight lows in the mid-50s will make for a comfortable setup for those watching the horizon. Drivers along I-87 and I-90 should be alert for patchy fog early Tuesday morning before conditions improve.

Tuesday itself turns warm, with highs near 81 under mostly sunny skies. Sunshine continues into Wednesday with highs again around 81. Conditions shift by Thursday as showers develop, bringing a 60% chance of rain into Thursday night. Friday looks wetter, with showers likely and highs only in the upper 70s.

The weekend offers improvement, though scattered showers may linger. Saturday and Sunday should trend drier, with highs in the mid to upper 70s under partly sunny skies.

Aurora chances fade after Tuesday morning, but September’s start brings a mix of clear nights and scattered showers. More advisories may be issued later this week.
