Binghamton, NY – After a sunny and mild Sunday, residents across Central and Southern New York should prepare for a surge of heat and storms beginning Monday and lasting into Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, temperatures will climb into the mid-80s Monday, with humidity pushing heat index values into the upper 80s and mid-90s. A frontal system is expected to arrive late Monday night, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms through Tuesday. Some storms could bring gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall, particularly along the I-81 corridor and areas including Ithaca, Binghamton, and Oneonta.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the region, including Elmira, Norwich, and Utica, under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms on Tuesday. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, isolated strong storms could down tree limbs and cause minor flooding in low-lying areas.
Drivers are advised to watch for ponding on roadways during the Tuesday morning commute. Residents should secure outdoor items, stay weather-aware, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain or lightning.
Storm chances taper off late Tuesday, but unsettled conditions could return later in the week.
