Low temperatures could damage crops and gardens in northern New York as a Freeze Watch takes effect for Lewis County late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Temperatures are expected to dip into the upper 20s, raising concerns for farmers and homeowners alike.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the alert runs from midnight until 9 a.m. Thursday. Conditions could bring frost and widespread freezing, with unprotected plants likely to be damaged or killed. Sensitive vegetation, gardens, and late-season crops are at highest risk.

In Watertown and surrounding Jefferson County, temperatures are also expected to fall below freezing, with patchy frost possible in valleys and rural areas. Residents across the Tug Hill Plateau should take action by covering plants or moving potted items indoors.

The early-season cold snap may also create slick spots on bridges and overpasses, especially before sunrise Thursday. Outdoor workers and those without adequate heating should prepare for wind chills in the 20s.

Warnings may be extended if temperatures remain colder than expected into Friday morning.
