Albany, NY – Fire danger is elevated across parts of Upstate New York Friday due to gusty winds and low humidity levels.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, conditions including wind gusts up to 30 mph and humidity dropping between 25% and 35% are contributing to a heightened risk of wildfire spread. The advisory is in effect through 11 p.m. Friday and covers counties including Herkimer, Montgomery, Schoharie, Saratoga, Warren, and Washington.
Officials say the most impacted areas fall within the Leatherstocking and Upper Hudson Valley/Champlain Fire Danger Rating Areas, where dry fine fuels may ignite and spread flames rapidly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged throughout the region.
New York’s annual spring burn ban remains active statewide through May 14. During this period, no burn permits are issued, and open burning is prohibited to reduce wildfire risk.
Residents are urged to avoid using machinery that generates sparks, safely extinguish cigarettes, and refrain from lighting any fires outdoors. For more wildfire safety tips and updates, visit the New York Department of Environmental Conservation at dec.ny.gov.
