Marquette, Michigan – Snow and a glaze of ice could make roads treacherous across Michigan’s central and eastern Upper Peninsula through the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. EST Wednesday for Alger, Luce, Delta and Schoolcraft counties. Total snow and sleet accumulations between 4 and 7 inches are expected, along with around one-tenth of an inch of ice. Wind gusts up to 40 mph will create blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility at times.
Communities including Munising, Escanaba, Manistique, Newberry, Seney and Grand Marais face the highest impact. Slushy roads may quickly refreeze where ice accumulates, especially on U.S. 41, M-28 and stretches near Lake Superior. Blowing snow could drop visibility below a half mile in open areas.
The hazardous conditions will affect both the morning and evening commutes. Drivers should allow extra time, reduce speeds and prepare for sudden visibility drops.
Residents are urged to carry emergency supplies if traveling and prepare for isolated power outages where ice builds on lines. The warning remains in effect until 7 p.m., with improving conditions expected later tonight.
