Upper Michigan – The National Weather Service in Marquette has issued a Thanksgiving Winter Storm alert for Upper Michigan, warning of heavy snow and strong winds beginning Tuesday night and lasting through Thursday. Forecasters advise travelers to avoid driving Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day due to hazardous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall rates of 1–2 inches per hour are expected late Tuesday into Wednesday, especially along the Keweenaw Peninsula and Lake Superior shoreline. Snow totals may exceed a foot in parts of the western Upper Peninsula, with localized areas possibly topping 18 inches.
Winds are forecast to gust over 40 mph, particularly in higher terrain near Lake Superior, creating whiteout conditions and dangerous travel visibility. The NWS warns the combination of wet, heavy snow and high winds could lead to power outages and downed trees across the region.
Drivers are urged to monitor road conditions and delay nonessential travel until late Thursday or Friday, when conditions are expected to improve.
