Minneapolis, MN – Winter may be knocking early across the Upper Midwest, with forecasters watching for the season’s first measurable snow before Thanksgiving. According to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center (CPC), a series of cold fronts from Canada could push south through Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas by mid-November.

The October 24 NOAA outlook shows a transition from mild conditions early in the month to near- or below-normal temperatures later on, along with increased precipitation chances for northern areas near Lake Superior and the Red River Valley. That setup boosts the odds for light to moderate snow, especially in northern Minnesota and eastern North Dakota.

While southern portions of the region—like Des Moines and Madison—may only see chilly rain, NOAA says lake-effect bands could form across northern Wisconsin and the U.P. of Michigan as Thanksgiving approaches.

Forecasters caution that pattern flips this time of year can happen quickly, and travelers should watch forecasts closely heading into the holiday week.
