Minneapolis, Minnesota – Scattered severe thunderstorms could slam the Upper Midwest Thursday afternoon and evening, bringing a high risk of large hail, tornadoes, and damaging winds across parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and northern Iowa.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, areas from Minneapolis and Rochester to Madison and Green Bay are under an “enhanced risk” for severe storms beginning Thursday afternoon and continuing into the evening hours. Hail larger than 2 inches in diameter is most likely in the region marked with green dashed lines, including eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

Cities including St. Cloud, Appleton, and La Crosse could see quick-developing supercells capable of producing isolated tornadoes. Strong wind gusts topping 60 mph may also down trees and power lines, particularly along the I-94 and I-35 corridors. Travelers should expect delays and potentially hazardous road conditions.

Residents are urged to review severe weather plans, secure outdoor items, and keep phones charged. If warnings are issued, move to a sturdy interior room immediately and avoid windows.

The threat is expected to taper off late Thursday night, but additional watches or warnings may be issued throughout the day. Stay alert for updates from local emergency officials and the National Weather Service.
