Sioux Falls, S.D. – A strong cold front sweeping across the Upper Midwest Thursday afternoon could trigger isolated severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts of up to 60 mph. The greatest threat will extend across southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa, far northeast Nebraska and into southeast South Dakota.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, storms are most likely to develop between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday. Even outside of thunderstorm activity, winds behind the front could reach 50 mph, especially west of Interstate 29.

Areas near Sioux Falls, Sheldon, Worthington and Yankton could see quick-developing storms capable of downing tree limbs, knocking out power, and making travel hazardous for high-profile vehicles. Motorists on I-90 and I-29 should use extra caution during the evening commute.

Residents with outdoor plans are urged to monitor the weather closely and have a safety plan ready in case severe storms strike. Bringing in loose items such as patio furniture and securing vehicles away from trees is advised.

The storm threat should diminish by late evening as the cold front pushes east, but breezy conditions are expected to continue overnight. Additional weather statements may be issued if storms intensify.
