Minneapolis, Minnesota – Scattered strong storms are expected to move through southern and southeastern Minnesota Sunday afternoon, bringing the threat of large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain to communities including Rochester, Red Wing, and the Twin Cities metro.
According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, the most active window for severe weather is between 2 and 5 p.m. in southern and east-central Minnesota and from 3 to 7 p.m. in southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The greatest risks include wind gusts strong enough to down trees and hail potentially over one inch in diameter.
The Twin Cities, Mankato, Owatonna, and Eau Claire all fall within the marginal to slight risk zones for thunderstorm activity. While these storms will be more scattered than Saturday night’s line, the strongest cells could still pack a punch. Drivers should delay travel during the storm window and secure outdoor items that could become windborne.
Conditions will calm significantly starting Monday, with isolated showers and breezy conditions across the region. Tuesday looks dry and seasonably warm, with highs returning to the low 80s.
More weather alerts may be issued if storm activity intensifies.
