La Crosse, Wisconsin – A narrow but potentially dangerous band of freezing rain is creating slick travel conditions early Tuesday across southeast Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin, with the greatest impacts expected during the morning commute. Even small shifts in temperature could mean the difference between wet roads and a glaze of ice.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through Tuesday morning for portions of southeast Minnesota and central to west-central Wisconsin. Ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch are possible in a narrow corridor stretching from near Red Wing, Minnesota, toward Wisconsin Rapids. The most significant icing may occur within a zone only 10 to 15 miles wide, making impacts highly localized but potentially severe.
Counties affected include Wabasha in Minnesota and Buffalo, Trempealeau, Jackson, Monroe, Juneau, Adams, Clark, and Taylor counties in Wisconsin. Communities such as Wabasha, Alma, Arcadia, Black River Falls, Sparta, Tomah, Neillsville, Mauston, and Medford could see icy roads, bridges, and sidewalks through late morning.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Power outages are also possible where ice accumulates on lines. Travelers should check 511mn.org or 511wi.gov for the latest road conditions. Advisories remain in effect through noon, though slick spots may linger beyond that time.
