GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Farmers and gardeners across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota may need to protect sensitive plants tonight as temperatures are expected to dip into the upper 30s, with some areas at risk of freezing. The National Weather Service in Grand Forks says clear skies and calm winds will allow temperatures to fall quickly overnight, with frost likely in some rural spots.

According to the Weather Service, the chance of temperatures dropping to 32 degrees or colder is 30 to 50 percent in parts of northwest and north-central Minnesota. Areas most at risk stretch from Roseau south through Bagley, Fosston, and Bemidji, extending toward Park Rapids. Even where freezing temperatures are less likely, lows in the mid-30s could still create patchy frost.

Travel impacts are not expected, but residents should plan to cover gardens, flowers, or other cold-sensitive vegetation tonight. Farmers may also want to take precautions with late-season crops in vulnerable fields.

Conditions are expected to warm back into the 60s and 70s during the day Thursday, but another cool night could follow before a gradual warming trend into the weekend.
