Duluth, Minnesota – Strong storms could sweep across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. Wednesday, bringing wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail as large as a quarter inch.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop during the day, with some intensifying into severe storms by late afternoon. The highest risk area lies south of the Iron Range and along Highway 2, extending into northern Wisconsin communities like Hayward and Iron River.

Cities from Grand Rapids to Silver Bay could see brief but intense storms, with the main hazards being damaging wind and hail up to 1 inch. The risk level remains at 1 out of 5, meaning only a few severe storms are expected, but fast-changing conditions could increase impact locally.

Drivers should avoid travel during peak storm hours, and residents are urged to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Secure outdoor furniture and charge electronic devices in case of outages.

Storms are expected to weaken after sunset, but additional watches could be issued if conditions evolve.
