Kansas City, MO – A powerful winter storm is bringing blizzard conditions across the Central Plains and Midwest, making travel nearly impossible in some areas. Heavy snowfall and damaging winds will continue through Thursday as the system moves toward the Great Lakes.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour will combine with wind gusts reaching 70 mph, creating whiteout conditions. The heaviest snow is expected from central Kansas through southern Minnesota, with accumulations exceeding 12 inches in isolated areas.
Travel disruptions are expected as snow-covered roads and reduced visibility make driving dangerous. Strong winds may also cause scattered power outages, particularly in the Southern Plains, where gusts could reach 80 mph. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for potential outages.
The storm is expected to shift northeast, impacting the Upper Midwest and western Great Lakes by Thursday. Areas including Michigan’s Upper Peninsula could see more than six inches of snow. Authorities urge residents to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions as the blizzard continues to intensify.
