Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Widespread damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes are likely across South Dakota and western Minnesota this afternoon, as a fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms barrels through the northern Plains.

According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, the storms are expected to develop by 2 p.m. CDT Monday and continue through midnight, impacting parts of South Dakota, Minnesota, and stretching into six states: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin. The greatest risk zone includes cities like Aberdeen, Sioux Falls, and Mankato, where wind gusts over 75 mph are possible.

Travel could become hazardous along I-29, I-90, and Highway 14, with sudden wind gusts capable of toppling trees, damaging roofs, and knocking out power. The National Weather Service urges residents to act immediately when warnings are issued—these storms will move quickly and offer little time for response.

Power outages, property damage, and brief tornadoes are all possible. Charge devices, secure outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary travel from late afternoon into the evening.

Additional severe weather alerts are possible later tonight. Stay tuned to local forecasts as conditions evolve.
