Detroit, MI – A strengthening late-season winter storm is set to impact portions of the Midwest and Northeast, bringing snow, ice, and freezing rain to regions of Michigan and Maine through Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall began early Tuesday across the Northern Plains and is spreading toward the Great Lakes and New England. Michigan’s northern counties, including Alpena and Cadillac, face an 80% or greater chance of ice accumulation exceeding 0.01 inches, raising concerns for tree damage and power outages. The I-69 corridor may see slick roads during the Wednesday morning commute.

In Maine, the storm is expected to arrive Wednesday night with up to 3 inches of snow in towns such as Greenville, Houlton, and Millinocket. According to the NWS Caribou office, sleet and freezing rain are forecast to follow by Thursday morning, before precipitation transitions to rain.

Travel is expected to be slow and hazardous, especially during peak morning hours Wednesday and Thursday. Residents are urged to prepare for changing conditions, charge electronics in case of power loss, and allow extra time for travel. Snowfall totals could approach or surpass early April records in some areas, with cold temperatures lingering into Friday.
