Michigan — Wind pushes light snow across parking lots and rooftops this morning as Lake Superior feeds fresh snow bands back into the Upper Peninsula. The air feels sharp and unforgiving, a clear signal that winter is ramping up, not easing.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, lake-effect snow ends briefly early today but redevelops this afternoon and tonight. Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for parts of western and central Upper Michigan, including the Marquette area. Snow totals of 3 to 6 inches are possible, with blowing snow reducing visibility at times.

Travel may become difficult on stretches of US-41, M-28, and exposed county roads, especially after dark. Gusty winds could cause drifting, and road conditions may change quickly under heavier snow bands. Drivers should plan extra time and keep emergency supplies in vehicles.

Snow showers linger into Thursday and Friday, but the cold becomes the dominant threat. The coldest air of the season arrives Thursday night and holds through at least Saturday morning. Daytime highs remain below zero in many spots, while nighttime lows plunge well below zero. Wind chills near 35 degrees below zero are possible, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors.

Extreme Cold Watches remain in effect across much of western and central Upper Michigan. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Prolonged freezing may also threaten water pipes and infrastructure.

Saturday stays brutally cold, even as snowfall becomes more scattered. Any brief daytime melting will refreeze hard after sunset, increasing the risk of icy walkways and roadways.

Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook keeps Upper Michigan colder than normal, with additional storm systems nearby. Winter remains firmly in control.
