Snowflakes swirl through the lights of downtown Marquette this morning, coating roads in white and signaling that winter has arrived in full force. The National Weather Service in Marquette reports that steady lake effect snow continues across the Upper Peninsula, enhanced by a developing system expected to linger through midweek.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, and Menominee Counties, where totals could reach 4 inches or more before tapering off late Wednesday. Winds will gust near 30 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow and occasional whiteouts along open stretches of US-41 and M-28.
Temperatures will hold in the 20s through midweek before dropping sharply into the teens by Thursday night. Even with moderate snowfall amounts, the combination of cold pavement and gusty winds will make for slick travel and low visibility during commutes and school drop-offs.
Meteorologists note this is part of an ongoing early-December clipper pattern bringing rounds of lake effect snow every few days across the Great Lakes. Another weak system is possible over the weekend, keeping flurries in play for Saturday and Sunday.
