Marquette, Michigan – Snow is expected to impact travel across much of Michigan’s western and central Upper Peninsula overnight into Friday morning, Jan. 9, as multiple Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. Thursday night to 7 a.m. EST Friday, Jan. 9, for Gogebic and Ontonagon counties, including Ironwood and Ontonagon. Snow accumulations of up to 4 inches are expected, with the highest totals likely east of Lake Gogebic, including Watersmeet, Ewen, and Bruce Crossing.
Additional advisories are in effect from 9 p.m. CST (10 p.m. EST) Thursday night to 6 a.m. CST (7 a.m. EST) Friday, Jan. 9, for Iron and southern Houghton counties, including Iron River, Kenton, and Sidnaw, where 2 to 4 inches of snow are forecast.
In Baraga and Marquette counties, a Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 11 p.m. Thursday night through 10 a.m. EST Friday, Jan. 9. Snow accumulations are expected to range from 1 to 6 inches, with the highest amounts likely in higher terrain south and west of Marquette. Areas closer to the lakeshore and south of Gwinn are expected to see lighter totals. Winds gusting up to 35 mph near Lake Superior may contribute to blowing snow along exposed roads.
The National Weather Service warns that snow-covered and slippery roads may significantly impact the Friday morning commute, Jan. 9, particularly on untreated surfaces, bridges, and rural highways.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time during the morning hours.
