Marquette, Michigan – Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as lake effect snow and gusty winds are expected to create hazardous travel conditions through early Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, Keweenaw County remains under a Winter Weather Advisory through 7 a.m. EST Wednesday, with an additional advisory taking effect from 1 p.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m. Thursday. Northern Houghton County, including Houghton and Hancock, is under a Winter Weather Advisory from 1 p.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m. Thursday, following the cancellation of an earlier advisory.
In Keweenaw County, up to 3 inches of additional snow is possible this morning, followed by lake effect snow this afternoon and tonight bringing total accumulations of 3 to 5 inches. Northern Houghton County is also expected to receive 3 to 5 inches of lake effect snow beginning this afternoon.
Forecasters warn that wind gusts up to 35 mph will lead to blowing and drifting snow, with visibility dropping below one-half mile at times, especially in open areas. Snowflake size is expected to be small, increasing the risk of rapid visibility reductions.
Travel conditions may become very difficult, particularly during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Snow-covered roads and reduced visibility are expected, especially along exposed roadways.
Residents and motorists are urged to slow down and use caution while traveling, allow extra time, and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Conditions are expected to gradually improve Thursday morning as winds weaken and snowfall tapers.
