Marquette, MI – Heavy lake effect snow and strong winds are impacting Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, making travel hazardous through Tuesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. EST for Alger, Northern Schoolcraft, and Luce counties. Snowfall of up to 6 inches is expected, particularly north of M-28 between Grand Marais and Melstrand, and north of Newberry in Luce County. Winds gusting up to 30 mph along the lakeshore are contributing to near whiteout conditions.
Travelers on M-28 and surrounding areas may face significantly reduced visibility, especially during the morning and evening commutes. Authorities advise motorists to exercise caution, as roads may be snow-covered and slippery.
Residents are encouraged to carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water, when traveling. Snowfall and hazardous conditions are expected to ease after 7 p.m. Tuesday as winds subside and snow bands shift away from the region.
