Escanaba, MI – A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Delta, Luce, and both Northern and Southern Schoolcraft Counties, beginning 3 p.m. Wednesday through 7 p.m. Thursday, as a strong storm system targets Michigan’s eastern Upper Peninsula ahead of Thanksgiving.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, total snow accumulations are expected to range between 3 and 11 inches, with heavier snowfall east of M-35. Winds may gust up to 45 mph, creating blowing snow and reduced visibility throughout the storm’s duration.
Forecasters warn that the Wednesday evening and Thanksgiving morning drives could be particularly hazardous, with slick roads and whiteout conditions possible in open areas. The combination of heavy, wet snow and strong winds may also bring down tree branches, leading to scattered power outages.
Residents are urged to avoid nonessential travel and to keep emergency kits—including flashlights, food, and water—in their vehicles. Those traveling for the holiday should monitor local forecasts and plan for potential delays or detours.
Conditions are expected to slowly improve Thursday evening as winds ease and snow tapers off from west to east.
