Marquette, Michigan – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect early Sunday as lake effect snow continues to impact portions of Upper Michigan, creating hazardous travel conditions before daybreak.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, the warning covers Baraga and Marquette counties and is scheduled to expire at 7 a.m. EST Sunday. Forecasters report additional snowfall of 2 to 4 inches, with the highest totals expected in higher terrain between Marquette and L’Anse, as well as areas north of U.S. Highway 41.

The snowfall is being driven by persistent lake effect bands off Lake Superior, which can lead to rapidly changing road conditions over short distances. The National Weather Service cautioned that slippery and snow-covered roads are likely through the early morning hours, particularly on untreated surfaces and secondary roadways.

Drivers traveling overnight or during the early morning commute are urged to use caution. The agency recommends allowing extra travel time and maintaining safe following distances. Visibility may be briefly reduced in heavier snow bands.

Emergency preparedness officials advise motorists who must travel to keep an emergency kit in their vehicle, including a flashlight, food, and water. The National Weather Service also noted that isolated power outages are possible due to the combination of snow and winter conditions.

Lake effect snow warnings are common in the Upper Peninsula during winter but can be especially disruptive in higher elevations where accumulation increases quickly. Conditions are expected to gradually improve after the warning expires later Sunday morning as snowfall diminishes.
