Marquette, Mich. – Swimmers and boaters along Lake Superior face life-threatening rip currents and high waves through Sunday evening, with officials urging residents and visitors to stay out of the water. Dangerous conditions remain in place for beaches across Marquette and Alger counties, including Presque Isle and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until 11 p.m. Sunday. Waves in rapid succession will create strong currents capable of sweeping swimmers away from shore. Middle Bay north of Presque Isle and the Au Train River mouth are among the highest-risk locations.
Emergency crews warn that similar wave patterns have led to rescues and fatalities in past summers. Drivers traveling near U.S. Highway 41 should also prepare for slick roads this evening as scattered showers move inland. Non-essential swimming and boating should be avoided until conditions calm overnight.
By Monday, skies will turn mostly sunny with highs near 61 degrees, offering relief after Sunday’s unsettled weather. Gusty northwest winds will ease into the afternoon, improving lake conditions for the start of the workweek.
The remainder of the week trends warmer and drier, with highs climbing into the low 70s by Thursday and Friday.
