Marquette, Mich. – Thunderstorms and scattered showers will keep much of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula unsettled through Monday night, with the strongest storms capable of bringing heavy rain and gusty winds along Lake Superior’s shoreline.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, rain chances increase Saturday afternoon with up to a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms developing across Marquette County and surrounding areas. Winds from the north could gust near 20 mph Sunday, adding to choppy conditions along U.S. 41 and M-28 near the lake.

Sunday offers a brief break with mostly sunny skies, but showers return late Sunday night into Monday with a 70 percent chance of rain. Thunderstorms could develop Monday afternoon, raising concerns for slick roadways and reduced visibility on key travel routes between Marquette, Ishpeming, and Negaunee.

Travelers are advised to allow extra time on the roads and avoid flooded low-lying areas during periods of heavier rainfall. Power outages remain a possibility if storms strengthen Monday afternoon.

Storm chances taper off by Tuesday, with sunny and warmer weather building in midweek. Forecasters expect highs to climb into the upper 70s by Thursday and near 80 by Friday.
