Marquette, Mich. – Morning fog lifted across much of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Thursday, leaving behind mild and sunny skies, but unsettled weather is on the way. Thunderstorms are expected to roll in Friday, and some could turn strong enough to bring damaging winds or hail.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, showers and storms will become more widespread Friday afternoon, with highs reaching the upper 70s to low 80s. The strongest storms may develop along western and central counties, potentially impacting travel along U.S. 41 and M-28 during the evening commute.

By Saturday, most of the region will dry out, but lingering rain is expected in the eastern U.P. Gusty west winds will be the bigger concern, with the Keweenaw Peninsula facing gusts of 30 to 40 mph. Boaters on Lake Superior are urged to use caution, and residents should secure outdoor items ahead of the weekend.

Conditions improve by late Saturday into Sunday, with drier weather settling in and more seasonable temperatures. Additional advisories may be issued if Friday’s storms strengthen further.
