Marquette, MI – The first measurable snow of the season has officially arrived in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, marking the start of winter weather in Negaunee Township, according to the National Weather Service in Marquette.

Forecasters reported 0.1 inch of snow early Saturday morning (Nov. 1), with light flakes still falling at the time of observation. While the total may increase slightly, the event marks the first measurable snowfall of the 2025–26 winter season.

Typically, the Marquette office records its first measurable snow around October 17, making this year’s arrival about two weeks later than average. October normally averages 5.3 inches of snowfall, though this year only produced a trace before November began.

The NWS noted the Halloween-night timing added a “trick-or-treat” twist to the season’s first flakes. Temperatures are expected to remain cool but near seasonal norms through the weekend, with no major snow systems on the immediate horizon.

Residents are reminded to prepare for slick roads during early-season snow events, as surface temperatures can still fluctuate near freezing.
