Marquette, Mich. – A Freeze Warning remains in effect from midnight through 10 a.m. Wednesday across much of central and western Upper Michigan, where temperatures are expected to drop as low as 24 degrees overnight. The deep chill marks the first hard freeze of the season for many inland areas, signaling an end to the growing season.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, the warning includes Baraga, Marquette, Iron, Dickinson, Gogebic, Ontonagon, Menominee, Delta, and southern Houghton counties. Clear skies and calm winds will allow rapid overnight cooling, especially away from Lake Superior, with the coldest air settling in valleys and lowlands.

Residents are advised to cover sensitive vegetation, disconnect garden hoses, and insulate outdoor pipes to prevent damage. Those with in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them before the freeze sets in. Agricultural operations across the U.P. are expected to sustain freeze-related losses, particularly in low-lying farmlands.

The coldest conditions will develop between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. EDT, with patchy frost and icy spots possible on U.S. 2, M-28, and U.S. 41 before sunrise. While sunshine will return by late morning, temperatures will struggle to climb out of the 40s, keeping a crisp fall feel through the afternoon.

Another chilly night is expected Wednesday before a gradual warming trend arrives late week.
