Michigan – Heavy lake effect snow continues across parts of eastern Upper Michigan early Friday, creating hazardous travel conditions and reduced visibility through the morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service office in Gaylord, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. EST for Central Chippewa County. The warning covers ongoing lake effect snow bands producing additional accumulations of 1 to 4 inches, with localized totals reaching up to 8 inches, especially north of M-28.

Forecasters say snowfall intensity may fluctuate significantly over short distances, a common characteristic of lake effect snow. Some locations may experience heavy snowfall and near-whiteout conditions, while areas just a few miles away could see little or no snow at times.

The weather service warns that travel could be very difficult, particularly during the Friday morning commute, as snow-covered roads and rapidly changing visibility affect driving conditions. Motorists may encounter sudden reductions in visibility as snow bands move across highways.

Residents who must travel are advised to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including a flashlight, food, and water. Drivers should allow extra travel time, reduce speed, and remain alert for changing road conditions.

Lake effect snow is expected to gradually diminish later this morning as wind patterns shift, allowing conditions to improve by late morning or early afternoon. Until then, officials urge caution, especially on untreated or secondary roads.

For students, commuters, and early-shift workers, the warning may affect school travel, morning commutes, and regional highway traffic during peak hours.
