Marquette, MI – An extreme cold warning remains in effect across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula until 1 p.m. Tuesday, with wind chills plunging as low as 42 degrees below zero. A cold weather advisory will follow, lasting until 1 a.m. Wednesday, with wind chills between 25 and 30 below.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the warning affects areas including Marquette, Ironwood, Escanaba, and Houghton. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes under these conditions, and hypothermia is a significant risk.

Residents should wear multiple layers, including hats, face masks, and heavy gloves, if venturing outdoors. Water pipes are vulnerable to freezing in these prolonged cold temperatures. Homeowners are advised to wrap or drain pipes and ensure that outdoor water systems are protected.

The extreme cold is expected to gradually ease into the evening hours, but temperatures will remain well below freezing across the region. Roads and sidewalks may also be impacted by icy conditions.

Stay indoors as much as possible, keep pets safe, and check on neighbors who may need assistance during this bitterly cold stretch. For updated information, follow local weather updates.
